Neo-Nazi Protests Expected in Newnan on April 21
The City of Newnan is expecting protests during an event from the National Socialist Movement in their city. The event from the neo-Nazi group will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 3-5 p.m.
Newnan Deputy Chief of Police Mark Cooper says the group filed for and received a permit for the event at Greenville Street State Park.
Cooper noted that the city’s goal is to “protect the First Amendment Rights of all citizens and visitors to The City of Newnan,” adding that multiple agencies will ensure the safety of everyone.
Cooper also asked for residents not directly involved in the event to avoid the area due to traffic concerns.
On their website, the National Socialist Party describes themselves as the political party for “every patriotic white American,” adding that they “cooperate and work with many like-minded white nationalist groups and others that are either National Socialist or at least racially aware of our European heritage.”
The complete statement from Deputy Chief Cooper is below:
We are aware of the proposed protest on April 21st and are engaged in preparations for the event and traffic concerns. The National Socialist Movement has filed for and received a permit at Greenville Street Park from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.
We are working with other local, state and federal agencies in an effort to ensure the safety of ALL those involved. Our strategies are planned to reduce the chance of physical altercations and minimize the risk of personal injury or property damage.
Our goal is to protect the First Amendment Rights of all citizens and visitors to The City of Newnan.
Traffic detours and road closures will be in place the day of the event and a joined contingency of local, state and federal agencies will be in place to help keep the peace between groups that may have opposing views of political issues.
The City of Newnan, The Newnan Police Department and other agencies involved do not support any one political view or group. Rather, we support The Constitution of The United States of America, the rights of our citizens and visitors and are sworn to protect the lawful expression of those rights.
We ask all people that are not directly involved in the event to avoid the area and understand the traffic and crowd control measures we put in place are designed with everyone’s safety in mind…”
